Gateway of India

Gateway of India is the major landmark of Mumbai City. Built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai in 1911. Located at the tip of Apollo Bunder, the gateway overlooks the Mumbai harbour and the Arabian Sea in the Colaba district. Gateway of India is consists of a large arch, constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style. However, if one observes closely the architectural style can be traced back to the Muslim lineage, this can also be seen in the edifice. The Gateway is also an access way to another important attraction in Mumbai i.e. Elephanta Caves. Tourists can travel on motor boats to reach there. The, Taj Mahal Hotel, which is India’s most prestigious and luxurious hotel is situated close to the Gateway of India.

Elephanta Caves

Situated 10 km away from Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves is one of the major tourist places in Mumbai. The caves are one of the oldest rock cut structures in the country and is a perfect example of art associated with the Hindu God Lord Shiva. The sculptures date between the 6th & 8th century. The island where the caves are located was originally called Gharapuri. Maheshmurti a three-headed sculpture of Shiva is the main attraction on the island. There are other forms of the sculptures of Shiva, called ‘Shiva Nataraja’ and ‘Ardhanarishvara’ that are a must see at the Elephanta Caves.

Colaba Causeway Market

An ideal place for street shopping in Mumbai, Colaba Causeway Market is know for its inexpensive clothes, fashionable boutiques, British era buildings and good street food.

Juhu Beach

This is one of the most visited places in Mumbai. Located at Ville Parle, Juhu Beach is the most active in the evening, when people from all walks of life visit to enjoy sunset, play on the beach and feast on street food like Bhel Puri and Pav Bhaji.

Victoria Terminus

Known today as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), this iconic railway station is located in the heart of the city. The station was constructed in the Victorian Gothic style. Just like the Gateway of India, CST is another major landmark in Mumbai. Declared as a ‘World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004, the terminus was built in 1888 and till today stand as one of the best examples of Gothic style architecture in India.

Film City

Placed close to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the best of Indian films is located in the vicinity of Aarey Colony in Goregaon. Film city is probably one of the most famous places in Mumbai for tourists and locals alike. The complex is spread across 520 acres and is a fantasy world. Film City hosts almost 1000 sets that can be set up simultaneously. Some of the highlights of Film City include real-like sets, which include fake lakes, fountains, mountains, gardens houses, picnic spots, cities and villages. Permissions are required to visit this set up.

Haji Ali

One of the most important religious places in Mumbai. Haji Ali Dargah is a must-visit. Haji Ali is said to have miraculous powers and that whoever prays here gets his wish fulfilled. Therefore, throughout the year the place can be seen crowded by the believers. The location of this religious shrine is another highlight, this holy place for Muslim is situated in the middle of the sea and is attached to the land through a 700 yard pathway that gets submerged in water during the evening high tide.

Marine Drive

Marine Drive is a 3km long stretch that links Nariman Point to Babulnath, and is situated at the foot of Malabar Hill. The location is a popular place to stride along the walkway and to view the setting sun at dusk. Also referred to as ‘Queen’s necklace’, as the street lights create an illusion of a necklace, when viewed at night from an elevated point. One of the oldest beaches in Mumbai, Chowpatty, is located on the north side of Marine drive. The beach is famous for its bazaars and fast food and snacks such as Bhel Puri, Paav Bhaji, etc.
